What Are Some Ways You Can Restore A Tooth?

People can lose a tooth for a variety of reasons including trauma, poor oral care, or infection. But when a tooth is missing, it usually creates very poor facial aesthetics. People become too conscious of how they look and think twice before smiling. Luckily today, cosmetic dentistry has made it possible for teeth to be restored. If you live in Greenville, SC and have lost or damaged a tooth for some reason, you can speak to a dentist in Greenville to find out your options and how your tooth could be restored. Dentists now have a variety of techniques that can help restore a tooth that is cracked or chipped.

They can even fix missing teeth. Restoration for a missing tooth may be classified as indirect or direct. With indirect restoration, the dental piece is customized and developed in the laboratory and then affixed to either your jaw or the partial remaining tooth.  Indirect methods include crowns and veneers. With direct restoration, the repair is made directly inside your mouth such as a filling. In general, direct restorations can be completed in one dental visit. Indirect restorations generally require a minimum of two dental clinic visits.

However, the treatment for your missing tooth depends on your personal preferences and affordability. Some new techniques that can help restore your smile include the following:

  1. Fillings: Dental cavities are commonly caused by a high sugar diet, drinking too many acidic beverages and not maintaining good oral hygiene. This eventually leads to an overgrowth of bacteria which cause decay and structural damage. Cavities are thus quite common, and they often present with pain. Thankfully, cavities can be easily treated in one clinic visit. The material used for a filling may include porcelain or ceramic, both of which are durable and last longer. Another option is to use a composite resin, but this filling requires a second visit.
  2. Crowns are another option that can be used to restore a tooth. Crowns help cover a damaged or unstable tooth. A crown, when properly done, can restore function, aesthetics and the natural color of your tooth. In many cases, the crown may be made from a metal composite which is then covered with a porcelain coating. In some cases, the entire crown is made of ceramic.
  3. Bridges: When an individual has one or more missing teeth which have been replaced with a crown, a bridge can be used to splint the teeth as a cover. This can help improve chewing, restore your smile and maintain the shape of your face. There are three types of bridges, and the procedure usually requires a minimum of two clinic visits.
  4. Implants are another option for missing or damaged tooth. The implant is often used to replace the entire tooth including the root. The procedure usually requires a metal fixture that is placed into your jawbone and replicates the function of the root. Once the fixture has fused with the jawbone, a replacement tooth is attached. In general, dental implants do not impact your adjacent teeth but play an important role in preventing erosion of the jaw bone. In addition, an implant can enhance your ability to chew and speak.
  5. Veneers are another option if you have a chipped or cracked tooth. A dental veneer is a thin shell of tooth-colored porcelain or a resin composite and covers the entire front tooth, (similar to a false fingernail). The procedure can instantly make your tooth look new, white and pristine. Dental veneers have to be customized, require a second visit, tend to be slightly more expensive and are only used to treat minor imperfections in your teeth.
